Tasting note of Engerstein Spatburgunder

Bright red hue with some evolution and a nice aroma of ripe cherries, herbs and oak. The taste is elegant and balanced in structure with a persistent aftertaste of ripe red fruit and vanilla notes.

Description

High quality Pinot Noir is no longer synonymous with the birthplace of Burgundy. The German Spätburgunders of the talented winemaker and Master of Wine Jürgen von der Mark in Baden also prove this. He now owns 8 hectares of land, the majority of which is planted with spätburgunder.

For this wine, Jürgen selects grapes from a vineyard with limestone soil on the Tuniberg, a hill just south of the impressive Kaiserstuhl mountains. Engertstein is a reference to the ancient name of this region. The vineyard management is done according to organic principles and Jürgen harvest the grapes by hand.

After fermentation, the wine matures for about 15 months in small wooden barrels, 10% new. The seductive roasted aroma of the oak is beautifully intertwined with the refined red fruit aromas of the Spätburgunder.

The 2016 harvest is now excellent, but will continue to develop in the next 2 to 3 years in the bottle. This is top class red wine that can compete with luxury Burgundy, but for a fraction of the price. The better German winemakers are the new players in the high-quality Pinot Noir market.
