Rémi Niero Collines Rhodaniennes Les Agathes Syrah 2023

Rémi Niéro produces beautiful, exclusive Condrieu and Côte Rôtie in the Northern Rhône. He represents the third generation of winemakers at the eponymous estate. While Niéro may seem small at just seven hectares, in the tiny, fragmented appellations like Condrieu and Côte Rôtie, it represents a significant estate.

While we'd love to drink such exclusive wines as Côte Rôtie every day, that would be a bit pricey. Moreover, Côte Rôtie needs some time in the cellar before it truly reaches its full potential. Luckily for us, Niéro also makes this delicious Syrah Les Aghates. It's Northern Rhône Syrah par excellence, but a bit more affordable and readily accessible.

 

Les Aghates is a 100% Syrah, grown on the higher hills near the village of Condrieu, within the Collines Rhodaniennes appellation. The grapes are planted on clay-limestone soil, and the vines are approximately twenty years old. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in wooden barrels.

With its seductive floral, peppery nose, ripe black cherries, elegant acidity, and refined tannins, this is a delightful mini Côte Rôtie. A little less complex and a bit shorter-lived than its bigger brother, but certainly no less delicious! Enjoy it young or slightly aged, ideally with a delicious meat dish like côte de boeuf or leg of lamb.
